How to make patterned papers - Part 1

I had lots of plain card stocks. But in love with patterned paper, because it gives a beautiful finishing.
Finally decided to create my own patterend papers with the items at home and loved the results.

  1. Vegetables for stamping
  2. Hand made stencils
  3. Marble floor technique
  4. Sponge technique
  5. Spray technique
  6. Textured materials
  7. Cotton bandage
  8. Thread and paint effect
  9. Blade and paint effect
    1. Vegetables for stamping

    Items required:
    • Hard potato, Onion, Thick beans, Thick lady finger
    • Preferably V-shaped knife
    • Poster/Water paints
    • Card stock
Cut the potato in to half. Draw the shape required. Cut the unwanted portion as shown in figure. Top the potato with color. Keep pressing potato on paper in the way you wanted. Allow the paint to dry before using. Try the same with Onion, Beans, Lady finger.

    2. Handmade stencils

    Items required:
    • Hard bind paper. Thick invitation cards will do
    • Paper knife or punches
    • Poster/Water paints
    • Card stock
Draw required shape on invitation card. Cut the unwanted portion as shown in figure. Keep the ready stencil on card stock. Paint over the stencils or do spray painting. Here is your beautiful patterned paper is ready. You may wish to try the snowflake patterns.

    3. Marble flooring

    Items required:
    • Enamel paints are best. Even nail polishs will do. (Choose paints which are non-soluable in water)
    • Hallow plate with enough water. Ensure that plate is bigger than card stock.
    • Card stock
Put few drops of paints in plate filled with water. Use a stick and

Draw required shape on invitation card. Cut the unwanted portion as shown in figure. Keep the ready stencil on card stock. Paint over the stencils or do spray painting. Allow the paint and paper to dry before using.

    4. Sponge technique

    Items required:
    • Poster color/Water paints are best. Because pours in sponge will not be closed
    • Double sided gum tape
    • Sponge firm one
    • Card stock
    • Waste scales/Wooden stick to attach
Cut the sponge in to shape required. Attach the sponges on to scale with double sided gum tape. Paint each sponge piece with different color. Keep pressing the scale on to card stock. With this technique created a chess board patterned and multiple circled patterned papers.

    5. Spray technique

    Items required:
    • Poster color/Water paints are best.
    • Waste tooth brush
    • Card stock
Make the paint a bit watery. Soak the tooth-brush bristles in to paint. Shed off excess water. On top of card stock hold the tooth brush. Press the finger on bristles and move the finger slowly in opposite directions. The paints are sprinkled and gives spray kind of look.

    6. Textured materials

    Items required:
    • Poster color/Water paints are best.
    • Textured materials like corrugated paper,
    • Card stock

Pour the little watery paint over the flat plate/surface. Dip the textured surface on to plate. Shed off excess water by shaking. Press the painted surface on card stock and run lightly if required. Allow the card stock to dry. Try the same textured with different colors.

    7. Cotton bandage

     Items required:
    • Poster color/Water paints are best.
    • Textured materials like corrugated paper,
    • Card stock
Take a cotton bandage. Dip the bandage in paint.  Squeeze the bandage to remove excess paint and water. Spread the cotton bandage on card stock and cover one more card stock. Press the card stock. Remove the upper card stock and bandage. Allow the card stock to dry. There is netted pattern card stock :)

    8. Thread and paint effect

     Items required:
    • Poster color/Water paints are best.
    • Cotton threads are best. Woolen threads will also do.
    • Card stock
Take a thread. Dip the thread in paint.  Squeeze the thread to remove excess paint. Carefully organize the thread on card stock in the way you wanted. i.e flower/leaf/Rectangle shapped etc. Cover with one more card stock. Hold the card stock with medium pressure. Slowly drag the thread ends out of card stock. This results in delicately storkes and shades of paint.

    9. Blade and paint effect
       Items required:
      • Poster color/tube water paints are best.
      • Blades, blunt knifes
      • Card stock
Squeeze the paint from tube on edge of blade or knife. Hold the blade at an angle of 60 degree inclined to card stock. Drag the blade for 1 cm. Do the same steps to cover card stock. This results in a kind of embossed look to card.

      My Daughter's Blurb :-)

      Hi All,

It has been a long time i did something creative and different. Has been occupied so much with my baby's needs and house hold chores. In between realized that my baby going to turn 1 in a short time.. and the day finally arrived. Here is the birthday blurb i did using the quillography. Very much satisfied with the way it's turned out. I believe it's the first quilled kannada letters too. Yay!!!

Traced the letters on to paper. Finished with outline with parrot green sheets. Wanted to do simple yet elegant quilling. So wrote down few of the designs on a rough paper to fill up the inside. As she is a budding rose, wanted to put twig of roses along with letters.

Purvi Kalyani - > A raga name in carnatic classical music. When she hears music, hands goes in air with rhythm!

Sorry for the bad quality photos from mobile. Actually the hanging looked more beautiful and bright in real. Will try to upload the photos taken from camera sometime tomorrow evening.

      Entering this project to
pratvamprogs contest (Luckily I had kept my design papers safely!)

      Toys to play!

      What a co-incidence!
I have baby which loves to play a lot. So toys come in handy to keep her active. When i heard about challenge so many ideas rushed to my mind. Created this at midnight after my baby sleeps with scoldings from mom.

      Here goes my submission.
Snake and ladder idea is incorporated as base for the card. The toys are used as an main embellishment.
The snakes are hand cut from patterned papers. Used wedding card for background and ladders. The toys are ABCD letter blocks, Joining blocks, Dice. I loved this background for childhood memory shots :)

      Magical Moments Scrapbook!

My hands were itching to create something different and creative. My hubby suggested a wedding scrap book as a gift for his cousin. Here is the result. Proud to say that everything is handmade :)

Front cover is decorated with stars and silver ribbon on to a Navy blue background. Is there any one who doesn't love stars and counting it!!!  There is a tag, with cartoon faces which represents sweet couple. The pages are placed in a frame type box, lid.

(Note: For contest purpose, used our photos )

The photo is very special as it reminds me of our marriage days and brings freshness. Photos are embodied in a traditional look. One side is decorated with quilled sunflowers and leaves. Other side decorated with Marigold flowers, Plantain stems, Torana,  rangoli, ganapati as in Hindu marriages. All the decorations are hand cut from papers. The ganesha is cut from a plastic sheet.

      Closeups:

Used patten papers to create the Eiffel tower and Statue of Liberty scenes. The cartoons are created using sketch pens. The girl lives in Paris and boy lives in America. Girl is a chemistry scholar and Boy is a physics scholar. So came up with this idea of showing their love to each other despite distance and fields :)
Left side bears the message: I’m a pint of lemon and he a pinch of salt. Together we journey on a neutral plane over a blue sky.
Right side bears the message: Hello, I’m a proton falling for an electron!  Together we shall cause an explosion, using nuclear fusion :-)

These photos were taken at Yumthang valley full of Rhododenus flowers. One of the best trip we had.   Yay! it's sikkim , God's garden..

      Floor Decoration

After my marriage, my new amma ;-) assigned me a new work of decorating the floor for Varamahalakshmi Festival. I was happy to accept it. For year 2012 tried the beads decoration. Used optical projector sheets to get the desired transparency. Hand cut them into the shape. Used half dome beads for better stickiness and used feviquick adhesive. Each leaflet is made from a single sheet. They have the flexibility to arrange the leafs like the way we want.

Moreover, can be reused safely for next occasion.

      Quillography

I love challenges and get excited with it.  Quilling is one of my favourite craft. I have done many quilling projects but never quilled a letter or text. Pritesh's first-blogoversarychallenge sounds to me as an oppurtunity. For people who don't know about pritesh, have a look at her work in http://quillingmesoftlee.blogspot.in

I know, I have to prepare for my Masters exam too. But that didn't stop me from this challenge.

It was month of August, My dear friends spoke to me after long time for casual updates and to have a fun filled meeting. I decided to quill "Friends" to celebrate friendship day.  Initially, I hand drew the letters. Got the layout from net. Used VIBGYOR/RAINBOW colors to provide shade to FRIENDS. Here is the work. As this is my first quillography, I am satisfied and took 10 hrs (daily 1 hr for 10 days) to complete.

I haven't studied anything from August 1st :-( Now it's high time to get back to studies..

      Valentines day card

I had a thought. I should make special gift to my husband. But my masters exams kept me busy. Hence this small and simple card on valentines day 2012. Finished within 30 mins :-)
